To ensure a high quality of life for European residents, a secure and affordable supply of healthy, sustainable local and regional food is essential. Building resilient food systems that can withstand and recover from crises is critical. Local and regional governments must tackle disruptions such as severe weather events, supply chain challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic, and rising food prices due to geopolitical tensions, including the war in Ukraine.
This Policy Brief highlights the important role of urban and peri-urban agriculture, as well as school gardens, in enhancing food security. It offers regional and local decision-makers practical strategies to enhance food security while supporting economic resilience, public health, and environmental sustainability. It also provides national leaders with insights into how local governments are addressing these challenges and outlines pathways for creating political conditions that enable coherent and integrated food systems planning.
