To ensure a high quality of life for European residents, a secure and affordable supply of healthy, sustainable local and regional food is essential. Building resilient food systems that can withstand and recover from crises is critical. Local and regional governments must tackle disruptions such as severe weather events, supply chain challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic, and rising food prices due to geopolitical tensions, including the war in Ukraine.

This brief emphasizes the role of urban and peri-urban agriculture, as well as school gardens, in enhancing food security. Additionally, it offers national leaders an overview of how local governments are responding to these challenges and outlines ways to foster supportive political environments for cohesive food systems planning.
