Human, animal and planetary health are deeply interdependent—yet modern societies are pushing all three beyond safe limits. Climate change, biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation contribute to emerging diseases, food insecurity and social instability. At the same time, socio-economic challenges—including low wages, poor working conditions in the food sector and inequitable access to nutritious food—worsen food poverty and poor health outcomes.

The brief introduces the One/Planetary Health approach as a unifying framework capable of addressing these challenges in an integrated way, showing why siloed policies are no longer sufficient. Building on evidence from the FoodCLIC city-regions of Lisbon and Barcelona, the Policy Brief offers practical guidance for European and national policymakers seeking to embed One/Planetary Health principles across the food system. It highlights ways to strengthen resilience, reduce inequities in access to healthy and sustainable food, and support coherent, science-informed governance across levels.
